 A primary focus of the Centre for Systems Biology involves the mechanisms through which genes and their products interact to organize both regulatory systems within individual cells, and more complex multi-cellular structures. This is being pursued at the structural level, through the analysis of protein complexes involved in signal transduction and the cell cycle. A variety of quantitative and qualitative biochemical approaches are being used to explore:
  • specific protein-protein interactions
  • global protein interaction networks in eukaryotic organisms from yeast to mammals,
  • and regulation of these interactions by post-translational modifications.

  Such data are being melded with high throughput array-based screens designed to identify genetic interactions and gene expression patterns, to identify sets of gene products that function in common pathways.

 Particular areas on interest include signal transduction, the cell cycle and DNA repair, the regulation of protein stability and trafficking, the control of cell size and cell growth, cell polarity, cell motility and regulation of the actin cytoskeleton, cell adhesion, metabolism, and the functions of post-translational modifications such as ubiquitination, phosphorylation, and glycosylation. There is a technical focus on high throughput methodologies for analyzing protein and gene interactions, for investigating cellular behaviour, and for analyzing small molecule compounds with specific effects on cell phenotype. there is a similar emphasis on building the software required to mine these data, and generate new hypotheses for further experimentation.
